Alumni Association of Department of Botany, University of Allahabad

Association is registered as a society under Uttar Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Registration No. ALL/08517/2021-2022) with an objective to bring all the alumni of the Department under one vibrant forum to exchange their knowledge and experiences for advancement of the Department and its alumni in the areas of academic, administrative and social welfare. The purpose of the Association is to work for the benefit of the students, meritorious as well as of economically weak section of the society, to work for the betterment of the Department, to conduct different academic activities and to have better interactions among all the alumni.

Department of Botany

Department of Botany is one of the oldest University Departments of Botany in the country. It came into existence in 1923 with Professor Julian H. Mitter as the founder Head (1919-1941). The Professorial Chair in Subsequent years has been adorned by Eminent Botanists like Professor Shree Ranjan, F.N.I. (1941-1957), Prof. R. K. Saxena, F.N.I. (1957-1959), Prof. R.N. Tandon, F.N.I. (1959-1965), Dr. A.K. Mitra (1965-1966), Prof. D.D. Pant, F.N.A., (1966-1981) and others. Dr. W. Dudgeon, Sri G.D. Srivastava, Dr. S. Naithani, Prof. P. Maheshwari, Prof. K.S. Bilgrami, Prof. M.M. Laloraya were other distinguished Botanists who had been on the staff of the Department. It is known for its multidisciplinary character and has earned international recognition for its standards of teaching and research. Department is proud of having produced eminent scholars and administrators, who have occupied or are occupying high positions within and outside the country. The Department offers teaching in two main courses at post-graduate level viz., Botany and Agricultural Botany with specializations in 10 areas of Botany and 03 areas of Agricultural Botany. The ongoing research programmes emphasize diverse areas of functional, structural, applied and evolutionary botany. The Department has the distinction of being recognised for research work in areas of Palaeobotany and Morphology, Microbiology, Mycology and Pathology, Phycology, Plant Physiology, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Biodiversity, Ecology and Cytogenetics across the world.
